An intelligent person learns from his mistakes while a super-intelligent person learns from the mistakes of others. The way to learn from our own mistakes is to make bad decisions, then get the experience from them and then ultimately be able to make good decisions. The way to learn from the mistakes of others is to learn from the experiences of others, read a lot and learn from the mistakes of the past, study a lot, and to look in to the Qur’an. The Qur’an itself, after we ask Allah in Surah Al-fatiha to guide us, begins by telling us the mistakes of the previous Muslim nation (Bani Israeel) and then instructs the current Muslim nation. Therefore, the Qur’an also tells us to learn from the mistakes of others. And we learn this throughout the Qur’an. The mention of the mistakes of the previous nations of Aad, Thamud, the nation of Prophet Lut and other stories such as that of Prophet Yusuf teach us lessons from the past.
Therefore what is important is that we contemplate and open our minds to the mistakes made by others and ourselves in order to improve our future, both in this world and the hereafter. May Allah help us learn from mistakes and may He help us better ourselves.
